As a surgical intervention, restricted to only the boulevard, would yield little success in achieving any real progress towards rectifying the negative effects of the built environment towards the natural one, the authors propose an URBAN DNA, a double helix combining a mixed use, pedestrian centred, vibrant urban corridor with a sustainable, biodiverse, turbocharged green corridor as a redesigning strategy for the Erie Boulevard. By identifying landscaped or abandoned green areas along the boulevards route with a high potential for promoting biodiverse development and gathering people the intervention area was extended and created a large scale, organically phased, long term strategy of weaving an economically vibrant urban corridor with a biodiverse, recreational green one.

Extending the required diversity concept to encompass both urban and natural diversity the authors proposed the URBAN DNA to encourage economic development, social cohesion and ecology to coexist in a mutually beneficial way by shifting focus from personal car based transportation towards multi-modal urban transit, with new facilities for public transport, bike lanes and extensive pedestrian infrastructure. The URBAN DNA creates an urban diverse mixed use ecosystem introducing humans into the newly created natural ecosystems in a healthy, responsible sustainable way. The proposed mixed use extends beyond the conventional horizontal to a more efficient and sustainable vertical deployment, generating higher densities and a more efficient land use.

Ground floor functions are chosen to promote street life, including commerce, services, community oriented spaces or art galleries. The large parking lots are replaced by more discrete ones either hidden behind buildings or on the first floor of mixed use buildings. Office spaces that contribute little to public life are placed on second or third floors while private functions such as housing, sports and educational facilities are placed exclusively on the top floors to shield them. The roofs are either green terraces, public sports fields or covered with solar and photovoltaic panels. The residential units promote community formation by providing generous common grounds or community gardens while the reduced traffic and numerous proposed trees, bioswales and green areas improve the environment’s quality, increasing leaf area index and creating new habitats, promoting biodiversity.

În elaborarea Erie Boulevard Revitalization Strategy autorii au concluzionat ca o interventie chirurgicala, limitata la bulevard, ar avea un succes limitat în ameliorarea efectelor negative ale mediului construit asupra celui natural. Astfel se propune un ADN URBAN, o dubla spirala ce combina un coridor urban plin de viata, cu functiuni mixte, destinat pietonilor cu unul verde, sustenabil, biodivers. Prin identificarea peisajelor urbane abandonate ce prezinta potential de promovare a dezvoltarii biodiversitatii si atractive pentru populatie, s-a extins aria de interventie si astfel s-a creat în mod natural o strategie la scara mare si pe termen lung de îmbinare a unui coridor urban activ cu unul biodivers de recreere. Extinderea conceptului diversitatii la naturala si urbana, permite autorilor sa propuna ADN-ul URBAN ce încurajeaza dezvoltarea economica, ecologica si coeziunea sociala într-o maniera benefica mutual. Se schimbând orientarea dezvoltarii de la una concentrata pe automobile catre transport inter modal cu facilitati destinate transportului în comun, piste de biciclete si infrastructura pentru pietoni. ADN-ul URBAN introduce oamenii în noul creat habitat natural într-o maniera sanatoasa, responsabila si sustenabila. Propunerea de mixtura de functiuni merge mai departe de conventionala orizontala catre o mai sustenabila implementare pe verticala, generând densitati mai ridicate si o mai eficienta utilizare a terenului. Functiunile de la nivelul terenului sunt alese pentru a promova viata urbana, spatii comercial, servicii, spatii destinate comunitatilor sau galerii de arta. Marile loturi de parcare sunt înlocuite prin unele mai discrete, ascunse în spatele parcelelor sau la primul etaj al cladirilor cu functiuni mixte. Spatiile de birouri, ce contribuie prea putin la viata strazii, sunt amplasate la etajele doi sau trei iar functiunile private, cum ar fi locuintele, facilitatile de sport si educationale, sunt amplasate exclusiv la ultimele etaje pentru a le proteja. Acoperisurile sunt fie terase verzi, terenuri de sport private sau sunt acoperite cu panouri solare si fotovoltaice. Unitatile rezidentiale promoveaza formarea comunitatilor prin alocarea de spatii sau gradini comune generoase, în vreme ce traficul redus si numarul mare de copaci plantati, canale de colectare a apei si zone verzi îmbunatatesc calitatea mediului, cresterea indicelui de vegetatie si crearea unor noi habitate promovând biodiversitatea.
